MTV telah mengumumkan nominasi Video Music Award (VMA) 2019 beberapa waktu lalu. VMA 2019 juga mengalami perubahan cukup besar dengan penambahan kategori baru untuk K-pop.
Dari situs resmi MTV, Taylor Swift dan Ariana Grande dinominasikan dalam 10 kategori dan menjadi musisi dengan nominasi terbanyak. Selain itu ada Billie Eilish dan Lil Nas X yang masuk dalam sejumlah kategori seperti Best New Artist dan Video of The Year.
MTV VMA 2019 untuk kategori Best K-pop dinominasikan kepada BTS (Boys with Luv feat Halsey), Blackpink (Kill This Love), EXO (Tempo), NCT 127 (Regular), Tomorrow X Together (Cat & Dog) dan Monsta X feat French Montana (Who Do You Love). Walaupun banyak penggemar BTS yang tidak senang dengan hal ini karena tidak akan menjaga grup K-pop keluar dari kategori utama. Tapi mungkin saja dalam jangka panjang, kategori ini dapat menghasilkan lebih banyak exposure untuk group K-pop lainnya.
Selain itu ada Missy Elliott sebagai penerima Video Vanguard Award tahun ini di MTV VMA. Dia juga akan tampil di upacara dan menerima penghargaan, yang menghormati para seniman atas kontribusinya pada dunia video musik. “Dampak Missy Elliott pada lanskap musik tidak terhapuskan,” Bruce Gillmer — head of music and music talent, Viacom & co-brand head at MTV International — mengatakan dalam siaran pers. “Visi kreatifnya di bidang produksi, kinerja, dan penulisan lagu tak tertandingi.” Elliott adalah rapper keempat yang menerima Video Vanguard honor, mengikuti LL Cool J (1997), Beastie Boys (1998) dan Kanye West (2015).
VMA 2019 berlangsung Senin, 26 Agustus di Prudential Center di New Jersey dan baru-baru ini diumumkan bahwa Taylor Swift akan tampil di acara tersebut. Berikut adalah list lengkap nominasi MTV Video Music Award 2019.
